A project too far?

The Porsche 911 40 Jahre or 40 Year Anniversary is a car I know well; a car that is greater than the sum of its parts and one that you must drive to understand.

The 40th anniversary is a limited run number of 1963 cars worldwide, celebrating the year the 911 was launched.

My journey started with Number 348, covering some 25,000 miles of combined UK/Europe Road trips, track, and routine use over a seven-year ownership, I felt like many owners of special limited-edition cars that non-reversable mods was a big no and likely to affect the value of the car.

Until Number 17 came along!

Number 17 was a car I knew of, along with its chequered past.

I’d sold Number 348 two years previously and had taken a back seat from the active forum that exists for the 40th Anniversary cars. Curiosity one day got the better of me and I had a look at the group’s Facebook page (and of course the “for sale” pages!) and there was Number 17… is it still for sale I wonder?

A speculative text message to the current owner sparked a whirlwind four days of messaging and research to find out if it was viable to return Number 17 to the road.

I made the trip to Reading to ensure the X51 was healthy and would fire into life, which it did so the deal was done.

The car had suffered light, cosmetic body damage which I assessed that it did not extend beyond the exterior panels – an easy fix for a competent body shop and more importantly wasn’t subject to an insurance claim.

I returned the following week with the trailer and brought her home to South Wales to begin the work on my second 40 Jahre.
