Bicester Scramble has a habit of selling out in minutes, so when we secured tickets, including a very last minute one for a straggler, it felt like enough of a win to justify turning it into a full weekend road trip.

We left Saturday morning, taking in some driving roads and a couple of stops along the way. It was five cars from the Laugharne Sports & Classic group, and everyone was on time (for a change) for an early start from Starbucks at St Clears… it started so well...
First stop was breakfast at the Owl’s Nest café just outside Llandovery, a haunt that’s really popular with bikers, and there were probably 100 bikes there.
It turns out there’s also an Owl’s Nest B&B nearby, which is where one of the team ended up after accidentally breaking away from the group and suffering a “navigation malfunction” - much to the bemusement of the B&B owner… I won’t name and shame 😂

The trip was quickly being billed as a “trial run” for Spa Classic at the end of May.
Keeping five cars together in the UK for the weekend was entertaining… seven on European roads is going to be a challenge!

Next, a quick stop at Wye Valley Brewery, partly for the photo-op, partly in hope of a well-earned pint… unfortunately, we’d timed it perfectly for no beer on tap. That said, it wasn’t a wasted stop. Karl had arranged to meet another couple of Porsche people and had a good chat in the sun, and we made the most of it with a few take-home supplies instead.

On the way to Bicester - Caffeine & Machine near Stratford, where we’d arranged to meet Kevin & Carrie, who joined us in their 356. The weather was spot on and the place was absolutely heaving. Plenty of Porsches in attendance, and Kev was quietly chuffed seeing a younger crowd taking an interest in his car.

The standard of cars there was seriously high, some eye-watering money being spent on modifications these days. The Beetle parked outside the entrance was completely ridiculous (in a good way). As ever, there were also a few wannabe racing drivers coming and going… the ‘don’t be a dick’ message still hasn’t landed with all the punters.

On then to the Holiday Inn in Bicester for a few drinks and some food, where we met Greg & Kev from Spirit Motor Club. We sat out in the sun talking cars, or more accurately, kept dragging tables and chairs further and further across the front car park to stay in the last bit of sun… to the point we were nearly in the road. At one stage, one of our group got caught out by a lift with doors on both sides, a simple concept, but absolutely baffling in the moment, the story was side splitting!
On to the main event, Bicester Scramble. After this one in particular, it’s easy to see why tickets disappear so quickly. A perfect venue, packed with incredible cars, and helped massively by the warm late April weather.

I won’t go into loads of detail, I’ll let the pictures do the talking. From our group, the vote for “one we’d take home” went to the Mercedes 300SL, closely followed by the Carrera Club Sport 3.2.
Not a bad way to spend a weekend, decent driving, many laughs, and just enough chaos to suggest the Spa Classic trip might be interesting…
