It’s that time of the year again when my dad and I rev up our spirits (and our engine) for our 3rd annual boys’ trip to the Donnington Historic Festival. Each May Bank Holiday weekend holds a new adventure, and 2024 was no exception!
We kicked off our journey with a scenic drive through mid-Wales, the lush landscapes a perfect prelude to an exhilarating weekend. It's always a blast when we can cruise through such stunning views, and this time, we were greeted by the first warm rays of the year—truly the first taste of summer after a lingering cold spell.
Arriving at Donnington, the vibe was as electric as ever with full access to the open pits—a real treat for any motor enthusiast. To wander among the legends, from pre-war Bentley Blowers to the iconic 1980s touring car heroes, felt like walking through a live museum of automotive history.
The Pit Stop Restaurant was our go-to spot for refuelling, not for the cars but ourselves, with some truly good eats! And a Battle of Britain fly past with a Spitfire soaring overhead, a majestic sight that never fails to stir the heart.
Dad was particularly thrilled this year, reminiscing as we watched the racing Minis zip around the track. He shared tales of his own automotive adventures—from owning Capris to Escorts—stories I've heard a hundred times but could listen to a hundred more.
Our evenings were spent at The Plough Inn in Disworth, where great food and a couple of beers rounded off our days perfectly. We even had some fantastic early morning conversations with other Porsche Club GB members, basking in the morning sunshine, sharing stories and laughs.
