The idea for Porsche to enter the Paris-Dakar rally reportedly came from Jacky Ickx. He had seen the 930 Turbo Cabriolet 4x4 concept car being tested at Weissach, and proposed that Porsche make a serious entry to the legendary endurance race. Given the green light by the marque’s head of development, three Carrera 3.2 cars were upgraded with four-wheel drive, heavy duty off-road suspension and other extras, creating the unique 953 model.

Three works cars entered the 1984 Paris-Dakar race, and the 911 driven by René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne achieved a remarkable overall victory for the model’s rally debut.

This replica composite engine lid with upswept spoiler has been painted first to ensure a smooth and uniform finish before being wrapped in premium 3M vinyl in the victorious colour scheme.
